This week was Hour of Code week – and coincided with an increase in activities in schools and other learning communities around the world, highlighting the importance of computer science, programming and coding. The Hour of Code campaign joins a very visible, loud and exponentially expanding global awareness about the importance of coding, programming, robotics and maker education.
Around the world, educational and community learning organizations have started to incorporate effective, practical and impactful computer science and MakerEd programmes into their teaching methods, curriculums and after-school activities. A host of support organizations have also started to gain prominence in these fields, along with specialists from both technology industry and education, in order to bridge the gap in knowledge needed to achieve successful integration of these programmes.
The evolution and integration of computing technologies into teaching and learning has never before experienced such rapid growth. Supporting this growth is a fundamental belief in the importance of technology and its essential and intrinsic link to the learning and innovation skills as outlined by Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21).
These four skills are known as the 4 Cs:
Coding not only allows you to think critically and logically but can also involve aspects of collaboration and communication (seeking coding help from the community, friends, peers and students). Likewise, the product of almost all coding projects and experiences are classified as ‘creative’ for their uniqueness in not only utilizing the coding concepts to provide automation and increased productivity in our lives, but also to solve real (authentic) issues. For collaboration, we recognize another important benefit of coding from the blending of learning methodologies in a class of students busy in coding workshops. Computer systems allow every student to not only advance at their own pace but can also provide instant feedback and access to a large bank of resources including those on the Internet and peers who may be sitting right beside them.
Ibelieve that the ‘hour of code’ should not be restricted to a week per year, but rather, once the idea that ‘anybody can learn’ has stimulated an individual, an ‘hour of code’ should take place every week – if not every day!
“The ‘Hour of Code™’ is a nationwide initiative by Computer Science Education Week[csedweek.org] and Code.org[code.org] to introduce millions of students to one hour of computer science and computer programming.”
When is the new iPhone coming out?
Is that the new or old iPad you got there?
Look at my shiny new Surface Pro!
and then there is a plethora of cheap Android mobile phones all over the under developed and developing world.
We proudly announce the huge statistical studies boasting number of devices now in the world and how many people are connected.
Oh! we love our smartphones, wrist bands, smart watch and now we are putting computing+networking circuitry inside our furniture, household appliances, our clothes and well… even our bodies!
How many of us stop to wonder and think for a minute the whole process and materials required to get these devices in our hands? How many of us want a charger in car, in office, in living room, in kitchen and one by the bedside too.
I came across this article on BBC and it has changed the way I think about acquiring more devices.
The dystopian lake filled by the world’s tech lust
We are literally violating and abusing our planet and it’s natural habitat as well as beauty while overtly and proudly practicing our basic instinct of greed in today’s age of abundance.
Hope that those who comes across my blog and spend some time to read the article will start the process of stopping to think before they upgrade their next device!
… it was frosty outside the hospital that night when a little angel was born and today she turns 10. A milestone. Maheen has grown up to be the most sensible young girl I have ever seen and I am not saying this because I am her father. I am proud of Maheen. My every heartbeat says a prayer for her well being and happiness. My wish for Mimi’s 10th birthday is that she continues to get the best of her life in this year and onwards. That الله may continue to protect her from all evil and bad things. Amen. Amen. Amen
Only four more days to go and our little princess will be ten years old 🙂
Time runs fast and in certain cases we would like it to go slow. This would be on top of the list of such cases for me. Seeing your child growing up into a fine young person is such a joy of parenthood and I am sure every parent in the world enjoys this journey as much as we are doing. I pray and hope I can make it even better for all of us.
This little bundle of joy has grown from
this beautiful baby
to this beautiful angel
and this year her ‘M’ birthday is being celebrated at the base of ‘Mont-Blanc‘ in Chamonix. Here are some images from last two days of this fun and enjoyable week in this wonderful place.
Installed the mobile WordPress app and now blogging from mobile. This will perhaps make me more active blogger.
Had some trouble today to get International calling and roaming facility switched “on” for my China Unicom SIM. Firstly, you need to have the password for your SIM. If you have never set it then you have to send a text message in format of L#AAAAAAXBBBBBB to 10010 where AAAAAA is your default password and BBBBBB is your new six digit password singulair medication. The problem was that China Unicom helpline said the AAAAAA is last 6 digits of your phone number by default if you never set a password. That didn’t work! so had to ask help from a friend who found, by browsing Internet, that it can also be 123456 or 111111. Well, 111111 worked for me and I could set a new password which is then required to be provided to an automated service while customer service makes the changes on your SIM card plan.
Voila. Just noting down to help someone else.
A cool demo of iPad concert capabilities.
